The bottom line
Anthropic has launched Claude Duet, an AI agent app for professionals and small business owners that works in the background across the apps you already use. It sends a morning brief, watches your connected accounts, and takes on tasks like chasing unpaid invoices or building a dashboard — but it asks before it sends a message, pays for something, signs a document, or deletes anything. It’s a research preview, available by waitlist to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US, and included in those plans.
- Announced October 21, 2026, as a research preview with a waitlist.
- Works across more than 6,000 connected apps, including Gmail, QuickBooks, Stripe, Shopify, and Gusto.
- Runs tasks on its own cloud computer, so your laptop or phone doesn’t need to stay on.
- Asks for approval before sending, paying, signing, or deleting; some actions, like moving money between accounts, are off-limits even with approval.
- No extra charge on Pro and Max, but background work counts toward your plan’s usage limits.
What Anthropic announced
On October 21, 2026, Anthropic introduced Claude Duet, a separate app in which Claude works as a proactive agent rather than waiting for you to ask. Anthropic describes it as built for professionals and small business owners who have more on their plate than they can track. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and is available as its own app on iPhone and Android, and on the web at claude.ai.
It’s labeled a research preview, which means Anthropic expects it to change as people use it.
What Claude Duet does
According to Anthropic’s announcement and product page, Claude Duet:
- Sends a morning brief on priority items across your connected apps.
- Keeps watch through the day, checking your connected accounts every few hours and notifying you only when something needs attention.
- Takes on larger tasks, from scheduling meetings to building dashboards, sales or financial forecasts, and prototypes, and tells you when they’re done.
- Works on its own cloud computer, with its own browser, so tasks keep running when your devices are off.
- Uses what Claude already knows about you — the memory, skills, and connected apps from your Claude account.
The small-business examples Anthropic gives are practical: finding unpaid invoices and drafting reminders, preparing payroll for your review, getting contracts ready to send, tracking a location-opening checklist including permit fees, and keeping a daily business health page.
What it asks before doing
Claude Duet reads, drafts, and prepares work on its own. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything, Anthropic says it “shows you exactly what it’s about to do and waits for your approval.” Some actions are off-limits even if you approve them, including trading securities and moving money between accounts. You can disconnect any app it has access to.
Anthropic also says the agent never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens, and that a separate check is designed to stop it from sharing the most sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and government IDs. It can make purchases through a virtual card in Stripe’s Link wallet or check out with Shop Pay — with your approval each time.
Watch out
Anthropic is upfront about limits: Claude Duet “may misread a thread or miscalibrate what’s urgent,” and it can miss something that arrives between check-ins. Treat the morning brief as a helpful first pass, not a guarantee that nothing slipped through.

Part of a wave of small-business agents
Claude Duet isn’t alone. In late September, Meta expanded its Muse agent to small businesses, free with usage limits and connected to tools like Shopify, QuickBooks, and Stripe. On October 8, Google launched a Gemini agent that starts with business customers and can use models from other companies, including Anthropic’s.
What these have in common is that they act, not just answer — which is the line between a chatbot and an agent we draw in our explainer on AI workflow automation. The more an AI can do in your accounts, the more the approval step matters; security guidance from OWASP calls the risk of AI with too much permission “excessive agency.”
If you get access, here’s how to start without handing over more than you mean to:
Step 1Connect one or two apps first
Start with the apps that feed the morning brief, like email and calendar, and see whether the brief is actually useful for a week before adding accounting, payments, or your store. Fewer connections means fewer places for a mistake to land.
Step 2Review its drafts like a new hire’s
Claude Duet prepares work on its own and asks before anything goes out. Read what it’s about to send or pay the way you’d check a new employee’s first week of work — especially anything going to customers, staff, or vendors.
Step 3Watch your usage limits
There’s no separate fee, but background checks and large tasks like financial models or decks draw on the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. If you also use Claude for daily work, see how quickly the agent eats into your plan before giving it more to do.
Step 4Keep a person on money and customers
Approve payments and customer-facing messages one at a time, at least at first. Disconnect apps you aren’t using, and check your Claude privacy settings so you know how your data is handled — the announcement focuses on security and doesn’t address model training.
Your next step
Before you join the waitlist
- List the three or four apps where your daily work actually lives.
- Pick one repetitive task to try first, like unpaid-invoice reminders or a daily summary.
- Decide which actions you’ll always approve yourself: payments, customer emails, contracts.
- Check whether your plan is Pro or Max, since Team and Enterprise aren’t included yet.
- After a week, compare the time it saved with the time you spent reviewing its work.

Who can use Claude Duet?
It’s a research preview available by waitlist to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US. Team and Enterprise plans aren’t included yet.
Does Claude Duet cost extra?
No separate price is listed. It’s included in Pro and Max and uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude, with background checks and larger tasks using more.
Can Claude Duet spend money?
It can make purchases through a virtual card in Stripe’s Link wallet or with Shop Pay, but it asks for your approval before paying. Trading securities and moving money between accounts are off-limits even with approval.
Which apps does it work with?
Anthropic says it can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins, naming Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, Shopify, Gusto, HubSpot, DocuSign, Canva, and others.
Is Claude Duet the same as the regular Claude app?
No. It lives in its own app, separate from the main Claude app, though it carries over your Claude memory, skills, and connected apps.

Not on its own. It drafts and prepares, but you approve what goes out, and Anthropic notes it can misread threads or misjudge urgency. It’s best treated as a fast first pass that a person checks.
